There's an almost forgotten one, it was called "Kiddie Cinema" my mom took me & friends there. Which just triggered another memory, "Picture Book" nursery school.

Mid State Bowl...there's some memories. Got a scar on my arm from trying to tackle one of the palm trees near the parking lot. Sad to say the bowl's no longer there...

I shopped at Rudy's and banked at BofA and remember Food Bank, I also remember when the fig orchards were still in existence at West and Dakota.

I remember while I was in high school, A bunch of us went to the Sunset to see our 3 movies. The main feature was "Night Of The Living Dead". It scared the crap out of me. And as if that wasn't enough, of course the guys decided to drive through the cemeteries on the way home. They stopped the car, & said it had run out of gas. I was so scared. I'll never forget that, but they were some fun & crazy times.

Anonymous on 05-16-2009 @ 09:31:32

I believe that was the Moon-Glo drive in. Do you remember tha "Sunset" drive in past the cemeteries on Whitesbridge Road? Always showed 3 movies for only $1.50 a carload. Boy! Those were the days.

that was long gone by the 1980's, I got here in 84 & I don't think there was any countryside between Clovis & Fresno except in FSU

I remember going to a friend's house-warming in 1989 or 90, she had bought a condo in a gated community, she said go east on Minarets from Blackstone, but all I saw was orchards & fields all over, so I turned west into Pinedale, big mistake, I saw the Vagos motorcycle club house, said to myself, wrong part of town, I think I'll go east like she said, turned right around & it was farther in past those orchards/fields

Just about. For my elementary years I lived behind the Thrifty's on Blackstone and I think Shields. You could see Slakey Bros. Manufacturing from my front yard. This was before we lived at the end of Bullard. Manchester Mall was jammin back then, and so was Fashion Fair. I,m talkin about the days before the 41 frwy was built. When Sound Stage was in its first location. There was Einstein Park, we practically lived there during the summer. Back in those days you could be 7 or 8 years old and go all over the place by yourself and your parents had nothing to worry about. I remember going to Thrifty's and getting the triple scoop for like 15 cents or so and of course having to check out the KISS, or Star Wars bubble gum cards. Going down almost every block from Blackstone to Fresno st. and having a friend on every block. I could go on.

It was located on Clovis Ave.south of Kings Canyon Ave. on the east side of the street.
It was torn down and now is the location of an auto parts store. I think it is an Auto Zone business.

On the way home from Ernie Pyle was Gong's Market. And then when right around the time I was in 4'th grade or 5'th came Round Table Pizza in Gong's parking lot. Bought lots of Astro Pops from Gong's and played alot of Asteroids in Round Table. Memories, memories.

We live up by Pine Flat Lake. Yes Humphrey's Station is still there, along with the little cafe and the water wheel. We love driving along Watts Valley Road, Sample Road, Burrough Valley Road and Maxson Road to get home around the back of the lake. Never saw a ghost but then we drive in the daytime. I took one trip with my husband driving up Tollhouse Road to get to Shaver Lake, whoa what a drive! It was again in the daytime. Maybe we will go up there in the evening sometime and come back down on the 168.

My husband used to drive up there for the old Clovis Ambulance (part of American Ambulance now) back in the late 70's. I always let him drive because I do NOT want to get lost, LOL! And yes, he says there were a lot of bad accidents on all those roads. A lot of places have no guard rail!

We work in town and drive down to Fresno every day. What a gorgeous commute!

Dude, It's like we grew up in parallel universes! I'm 4 years older and lived just off Fresno St. between Shields and Dakota. I went to Manchester School and then Ft. Miller. But we hung at the same haunts -- Manchester Center, McDonald's, Arthur's, Wonderland & Blakeley's. You're right -- those were very happy days!

I grew up on Willow and Olive, went to Ewing Elementary, Kings Canyon and McLane High School. I also remember all of the Al Radka commercials about Lesterburger ..."Let us eat it!" and in fact my first job in High school was at Lesterburger on Belmont and Chestnut when Les Junior put in the first "Charbroiler" in Fresno. As a kid I remember going to Rudy's with my brother and sister on Saturdays to spend our weekley quarter allowance, and afterwards either stopping at Dairy Delight or Lesterburger (both on Belmont) for lunch. I remember the Carosel Skating Rink on Shields on Friday nights (where I got my first kiss), Hank Swank's 9 hole Par 3 Golf Course on Maple and Shields, and of course Blakley's Swimming Pool with the Tower and the tall slide. Don't forget all of the Drive In movie theaters when I was in High school...The Starlight Drive In (where my sister worked), The Moon Glow, and even the Motor In. I remember when we used to cruize Belmont. Yes, Arthur's Toys was thee place to go to find your toys and games. I remember when the city of Fresno only had about 30,000 residents and Shaw and Blackstone avenues were on the way out of town. I've tried to tell my kids throughout the years of my childhood and have taken them to many of these places but they just think I'm getting seanile. One day when they get to my age of 53 I hope that they will have some of the fond memories I've had of Fresno.

I was there at Bullard, used to party in the figs and at a place called Logan's Park that might not be there anymore. Lived all the way up Bullard till you get to the street right before the railroad tracks. The housing track on the right used to have a place in the middle of it that we used to call Mexican Village, because it really was one. The homes were built around '81. Went to Figarden School, then Lawless for 7'th and 8'th grade right when it opened. Had Mr. Jamushian as my 7'th grade teacher. I know about the figs.

I think it was called Harpain's Dairy - not sure of the spelling. Had a little "zoo" with monkeys and other animals. They had the absolute best, thickest chocolate milk. I remember it coming in a class bottle.

Sparky's is on Ashlan, east of Cedar. Not the same as the old blackstone/clinton store...

The Lesterburger at Chestnut and Belmont was originally built by a couple named Walt and Elenor and named Lucky Burger. The original Lucky Burger was on Olive between Wilson and Roosevelt. It was not much more than a shack, but had the most awesome hamburgers.

In the late 60s, the Fresno Bee district 1 circulation house was in a metal quanset hut on Wilson just behind the Mohawk gas station. This is where the carriers would get their papers, fold and pack them for delivery. I had route 36, the east side of Wilson and west side of Roosevelt from Olive to McKinley. We used to get coupons for free burgers, etc from Lucky Burgers as incentives.

Walt and Elenor were in the process of building the new Lucky Burger on Chestnut when Walt died of a heart attack. Elenor couldn't keep both places going, so she moved into the new store and shut down the shack on Olive Ave.

There was also a great Italian/Greek deli on Olive by the pet store at San Pablo Ave. I can't remember the name, but my nose still remembers the great aroma that would hit you as soon as you opened the front door. The Tower district was like its own little city, you could buy almost anything in about a 10-12 block area.

What about the Pop Shoppe?! I've thought about the Pop Shoppe so many times over the years! Anyone remember where they were located? Was it like Cedar and Ashlan? Apparently, it's a Canadian-owned company, still going strong in Canada, and recently expanding back into the US. You can get Pop Shoppe soda in Portland! I can still taste the pineapple soda... yummmm.

There is STILL a lot of good things about Fresno and sometimes I miss it. Sometimes more than others. You're right about there being a lot of nice people -- ultimately that's what keeps pulling me back. Most of my flesh-and-blood friends are still in Fresno and it's probably always going to be home. I just hope it doesn't become unrecognizable in the time it takes for me to come back again!

Ya know, I kind of miss Fresno. But the Fresno that was. I guess you really can't go home again...*sigh*
you may be right, since everything changes, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst, this is my second time here, I moved to Fresno in the mid 80's & left in 92, then moved back from LA in 97
the innocence from a bygone era is gone, but there sure are a lot of nice people here, its home
