First seeds of the new year
By mid-January I start thinking about planting seeds. Feb 14th isn't too late. It was actually feb13th but I don't like to put that number on anything. And the 14th was Valentine's Day so it's a good number. 60 - 100 days till flower or fruit. Hope it's more like two months instead of 3 months and ten days.
I hope they'll come up quickly and make usable sage for the kitchen. There's beans and parsley, too. A couple of packets of wildfrowers filled up a tiny patch of ground. Sheese, they don't give you much for a dollar.
I hope things get better. If that unemployment rate could come down another half a point that would help a lot.
It looks like the more Mitt, Newt, Santorum and Paul debate, talk and campaign, Obama rises in the polls and they diminish. It just came out today that most people, including Catholics support Obama's position on contraception. http://tiny.cc/lqjli http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/public-backs-obama-birth-control-figh...
So, I think things will get better in that respect - a second term for Obama. They can't seem to beat him in the marketplace of ideas. But, nearly as important will we retain our majority in the Senate? And, if we can't gain a majority in the House, can we at least cut their majority right down to the quick? With a razor-thin majority they will be more likely to find some flexibility. God knows they've been totally inflexible on every traditional issue and a bunch of new wacky ones since the 2010 mid-terms.
I hope things will get better around here. That people will find work that are unemployed and want a job. That "In-Sourcing" will take hold and we begin to bring jobs back to America that were shipped overseas since the 1990s.
I just read that Apple is now worth more than Microsoft and Google combined. Do they really have to make all those iPhones and iPads in China? Maybe we can guilt them into making a bunch of stuff here in the US of A. Investigative reporters could do more stories about the working conditions in those Chinese factories. Once Apple and the American public gets a belly full of how those workers are treated in those factories maybe they'll figure out a way to make some of that stuff Onshore. When Apple said they have to make their stuff over there because they have access to a thousand educated computer engineers who will work for peanuts I think they were lying. The only reason they make it there is because they make a bigger profit. If we can guilt them into seeing the folly of their ways maybe they will open some Apple factories here.

The first seeds of the new year bring hope for the future and things do indeed grow in Fresno. What do you hope for in the coming year?
