"How do you like your gesso?"
At West Coast Canvasses, the first question we ask is “How do you like your gesso?”
By that, we mean, do you like it really smooth, in which case you want our “Mirror Lake finish,” or do you like it very rough, in which case you want our “Mt. Whitney finish.”
The “Mirror Lake” in the name “Mirror Lake finish” comes from the small lake in Yosemite Valley that at times gets so smooth that it is mirror like. Of course, Mt. Whitney is the highest point in the continental US at 4421 meters.
Our “Mirror Lake finish” is built with six layers of our special 100% gesso and six sandings, among other things. Our “Mt. Whitney finish” is built with three layers of our special 100% gesso, among other things.
Most painters prefer one or the other, and they want it pushed to the extreme; ie, they don’t just want it smooth, they want it as smooth as it can be made, or they don’t just want it bumpy, they want it really bumpy.
We only make these two finishes as we are drawn to opposites, especially when pushed to the extreme. The combination of these two creates in our minds an irresistible attraction. Bottom line: if you want something medium, get it from China!
Most painters select one and stick with it throughout their painting careers.
If you have a preference, but have been frustrated by the “medium rough” cheap Chinese crap sold at the big box art places, like Michaels, Aaron Brothers, and Allards, why not come down and see if we have what you want.
If you don’t have a preference, we suggest you start with our “Mt. Whitney finish,” and then try our “Mirror Lake finish,” and then hopefully you will know which works best for your creativety. We offer a special entitled “Find Your Finish” in which if you buy 2 canvasses of the same size but with different finishes at the same time, you save 10% off the purchase price of the two.
Currently, we have the following canvasses ready to buy:
1 3’ x 5’ x 2.5” Mark R One, 10 oz. house canvas, 3 coats white gesso, “Mt. Whitney finish,” double wire, $150.
