The Sand Lady of Pinedale

There is a story told in the north Fresno neighborhood of Pinedale that there is a mischevious spirit wandering the streets at night. She is in the guise of an old Hispanic woman carrying with her a small tote bag. If someone approaches her she will throw sand in their eyes, blinding them. When the person clears the sand from their eyes and regains their vision, the woman is no where to be seen.

I had some friends who lived in Pinedale for a few years, but they had never heard of this story. I wonder if this is another Hispanic folklore? Something like the lady in white, who wanders river roads mourning her drowned children and drowning anyone who dare approaches them? Or could this just be a cranky woman who enjoys a late night walk and if anyone bothers her, she tosses sand in their eyes (I'm assuming pepperspray wasn't available)?

Now I don't know if this story is nothing more than urban legend.  But of all the stories I've researched over the years, it has to be my favorite.

Being blinded by sand thrown in your eyes is no joke. But...who would win in a grudge match, The Sand Lady of Pinedale or the Wolf-Ape of Watts Valley? In the 70s, when I was young and dumb, we would drunk-drive around Watts Valley late at night, shooting at rabbits with a pellet gun.

Hmmm I like this. Urban legend vs. urban legend.

Let's analyze this. The Wolf Ape has an edge as it's speedy, agile, and has claws. But the Sandlady is a dirty fighter. Every time you would approach her to attack she would toss sand in your eyes and blind you. It's a tough call.

If the Sand Lady had superpowers, like being able to disappear or the sand having magical powers, then it would be close, but, a Wolfman-like creature would definitely have the advantage, with fangs and claws. A little old lady wouldn't stand a chance with just a bag of sand.

I think you have her confused with "The Pine Lady of Sandale", who throws pine-scented air fresheners in the faces of innocent passerbys.
