Q & A with The Art House's Adam Mena
For the last few months, a visit to the ArtHop galleries hasn't been complete unless you've stopped by the Art House. It's a breath of fresh air for young artists in Fresno and aimed at those that prefer skateboards with their art over wine and cheese.
We sat down with Adam Mena, one of the main forces behind the Art House, to talk about how the space came about.
Fresno Famous - Could you tell us a bit about your background and how you became interested in art.
Adam Mena - The four of us are a collective of variations of art, we are all driven and passionate individuals. Separately we have always been interested in art, finding our own influences whether it be older siblings, local artists, or something simple like geometric patterns in a building.
FF - Tell us how the Art House got started.
AM - We were all renting space at Broadway Studios when the idea floated around about finding a warehouse together to have bigger workspaces and our own gallery to display our art. The idea took about six months to become a reality, but we finally found the perfect location. It was a struggle at first to get the Art House going but we managed to pull it off.
FF - What is the inspiration behind the Art House? Any other spaces in different cities or any artists in particular?
AM - Our inspiration comes from the original H Street gallery and crew; Mike Howe, Eatcho, Jason Graham, Romero Martinez, Michael Garcia, Josh Wigger etc. Although we also have been inspired by multiple galleries in Fresno and other cities like San Francisco and LA. we seem to gravitate towards more contemporary galleries with a do it yourself mentality.
FF - Who is involved with the Art House.
AM - Adam Mena, Chris Geigle, Erik Beltran, Creighton Geigle, and anyone else in the community willing to collaborate with us.
FF – How do you guys choose the art that is on display?
AM - We Have a sign up sheet that allows up and coming artist as well as established artists to sign up and show their work.
FF - Why did you guys feel that creating this space was needed in Fresno?
AM - Originally we created the Art House for ourselves as a place to work on our big projects, but as time went on we started to develop the concept of bringing the local creative community together under one roof.
FF - What has been the response you guys have heard from the public? Positive and negative?
AM - We have had nothing but positive feed back from the community.
FF - What do you see in the Art House’s future?
AM - Our Goals for the future are to keep having new and fresh artwork every month and possibly connecting with big name bands to play shows.
The Art House is open every first Thursday and for various special events. It is located at 1612 H Street in downtown Fresno. More information can be found at www.fresnoarthouse.com
