May is bike month. This weekend was the California Classic Weekend ride. Today is the Bike-to-Work Coporate Challenge.
I'm all about it. Got my Levi commuter jeans on and everything.
While there is bunches of jolliness and frivolity that comes with Bike Month, it's easy to forget what's it is all really about: Getting people on bicycles and making sure they can ride safely. Which brings up tomorrow night's city council meeting.
Check it: The council will be voting on a proposed bike lane/road diet on Gettysburg Avenue, from Fresno Steet to Winery Avenue. There is some concern that the council will vote no, because their constituents don't understand the importance of bike lanes or what a "road diet" means.
I won't bore you with the details of why these bike lanes are good for the neighborhood (and the city at large). For that you can read this peice posted on I Bike Fresno. But bike lanes are good and we need more of them. Craig Scharton has this saying he throws out when talking about city planning (he's talking downtown specifically, but I think it's fitting here to). It's this: What would cool cities do?
More bike lanes? Bike lanes that are paid for by federal funds? It's a no brainer.
If you want to support bicycling and can make it out to the meeting, the vote is scheduled for 10:15-11 a.m.
