Sci-fi author John Scalzi used to write film reviews for The Fresno Bee back in the 1990s, before leaving to become an editor at America Online. Eventually he started writing books full time and has released several (both fiction and non-fiction) with some critical success. His latest "Redshirts," is a Star Trek takeoff (its name coming from those famous expendable ensigns, the ones who tag along on missions because someone has to die).
For what it's worth, the AV Club, which I tend to trust for its book/music/movie reviews , gave "Redshirts" a B+.
