Current TV becomes Al Jazeera America
In 2005 former Vice President Al Gore and partners started Current TV. Now, eight years later they have sold it to Qatar based Al Jazeera for 500 million dollars. All the live talk shows had their last day, yesterday and Al Jazeera America will launch this coming Tuesday, Aug 20th on Comcast channel 107.
I’m always searching for different views other than right-wing political talk and Current tv has been a refreshing alternative. My favorite was the radio show of Stephanie Miller, broadcast on KTLK in Los Angeles. There were other shows that featured live political talk: The Young Turks, The War Room with former Governor Jennifer Granholm and the Bill Press show among others.
Stephanie let loose with some inside info yesterday and said that her radio show has found a tv outlet but cannot talk about it. But, she will be on tv again, soon. I like radio shows on tv and wonder why more radio shows don’t broadcast on tv?
One of my favorite local Fresno radio shows that would be perfect for this is The Local Show with Josh and Jaime on KFSR 90.7fm, mondays 6-7pm. Sometimes, the best part of the show is the banter between the two hosts, although it is fun to keep up on what’s going on with the local bands and who will be the next “Fierce Creatures”.
When Current tv started way back in 2005 they said it was aimed at the 18-34 demographic. What a laugh! They never hit that bullseye, but they did get old, political news junkies like me to watch. And, now I’m hooked on the Stephanie Miller show. I got the iHeartRadio app for my Nexus7 and I can listen to her radio show and look forward to when the tv show starts back up again.
Al Jazeera America should be interesting. They’ll have at least as much of a problem attracting an audience as Liberal Talk did. How many times have liberal talkers tried to compete with Rush Limbaugh and failed? Air America, anyone? We shall see what the ratings are in a few months. Rush, Fox and all the regressive talkers should help them gain an audience by bad-mouthing the channel that published messages from Osama Bin Laden from 2001-2011.
Being well-informed means listening to a wide variety of sources and I’ll watch Al Jazeera America to hear that Arab point of view. They will have some ex-CNN and NBC anchors, most notably Ali Velshi, Soledad O’brien and John Seigenthaler, Jr. I’m sure there will be some truth there we cannot hear anywhere else. They had Al Jazeera America news on KPFA, 88.1fm for a while, a year or so ago, but they took it off.
