Our picks for F.U.S.E. fest
The celebration of all things music and local is returning for the 2013 installment this weekend. There are plenty of awesome bands on board. You can check out the lineup at www.fusefest.com.
As for us, here are our picks for this weekend:
-Fatty Cakes & The Puff Pastries: It is safe to say that these girls are probably doing some of the most exciting things in Fresno. This is what happens when you mix a fully-embraced collective of Supremes members, a "girl's night in" with junk food, a teenager's journal and Saturday morning cartoons. If you have a hard time imagining what that would look like, then this is something you need to check out. We dare you to keep a straight face when they play.
Fatty Cakes mastermind Amber Fargano is a show stealer. Be careful. She might even steal your snacks too. We aren't one to spill the beans, but we hear they have a surprise in store.
- The Sleepover Disaster: After a long absence, the boys in The Sleepover Disaster return to the F.U.S.E. stage. Sometimes, I like to think that I have been involved with Fresno music for a long time. These guys predate me and I remember growing up and having a lot of respect for these guys. These guys inspired the local indie rock bands that followed in their footsteps.
Their set at the Catacomb Party showed that these guys can make a strong comeback and that many people were anticipating their return. Reflect on old times and embrace the fuzz.
- Actress: Don't call this a side project. Light Thieves drummer Kaleb Saldate can knock socks off from beyond his drum set. Add pianos, guitars and a killer voice on top of the already outstanding drumming to get the Actress album.
I got a sneak peak of some of the new songs and they are definitely some of my favorite tunes this year. Check out his first show in over a year.
- Le Wolves: These guys will make you hate your first band even more than you probably already do. They've moved beyond the local DIY punk venues/house shows with their bluesy sound. Their music plays like an old record, but the fact that these guys are so young has helped them craft music that doesn't sound the slightest bit outdated. Oh, and they put on quite a killer show.
- Werebear and Sci Fi Caper: Two young bands that are embracing the punk and weird side of things. Don't worry. They also offer a bit of poppiness that are sure to win fans over. Check these guys out to see what the kids are into nowadays. Trust us, you will turn into one of them and fall in love.
