Reel Pride kicks off today in the Tower District
If you are a regular in the Tower District, the Reel Pride festival should definitely be on your radar. For years, the festival has presented quality films that explore the many aspects of LGBT culture. Many films are now considered cult classics and some even have major stars.
There are TONS of films this year. A full schedule can be viewed at www.reelpride.com.
Here are some of our picks:
Interior. Leather Bar - If you have followed James Franco's career over the last few years, you've noticed he has portrayed some of history's greatest artists that identify as queer. Also, many of these films have been on the indie side of the film spectrum. This film follows that path in certain respects, but offers a whole different take.
In 1980, Al Pacino starred in the film Cruising. He portrayed an undercover cop that was investigating a murder within the leather bar scene. The film caused quite a stir within the industry and the director was forced to remove over 40 minutes of the film. James Franco set out to reimagine the lost 40 minutes and the controversy that took place behind the scenes.
Born This Way - There are still countries around the world that outlaw homosexuality. This documentary follows some of the people that meet discreetly in Cameroon. This country als o happens to arrest the most homosexuals annually than any other country that outlaws it.
Follow the brave individuals that are profiled as they let viewers know what it is to be gay and maintaining a low profile.
I Am Divine - How did John Waters put himself on the map? With a larger-than-life drag queen named Divine. He was performing drag during a time when you didn't see drag queens in movies. At the same time, he was creating new standards for drag culture. He was offensive, funny and out to scare the normal society that he felt rejected him.
Hear from some of the poeple who befriended Divine through his career and from those that were inspired by him. Divine is one cultural figure that helped many break out of their shell.
