Rambo's arriving on Flight 409

On the cover of Friday’s “7” - the Bee’s entertainment guide for the weekend - was Sly Stallone. John Rambo is kicking ass for the fourth time, and by putting him on the cover, the Bee is telling you this is the number one thing to do in Fresno this weekend.

TopThis when about-to-be-signed Fresno area band Flight 409 is having two CD release parties over the weekend.  Yet, the Bee feels the top event is the opening of a retread movie.

Yes, Mike Oz did a nice article on Flight 409 inside the 7, but the Bee Overlords ignored that. Why couldn't Flight 409 make the cover over Rambo?

Flight has major buzz around them. Record companies are watching them and were watching this weekend. Like their music or not, when you listen to their songs, they scream for radio airplay. The Bee’s own music critic voted them Fresno's most signable band. So doesn't that deserve the cover over fucking Rambo?

The Bee thinks of itself as being a champion for local issues. I guess Rambo must be from Fresno or something.

My point is, the Bee could put anything they want on the cover of 7, but they choose to put a movie with no local ties (there wasn't even a local review of it in the 7).

Whatever is on the cover of 7 isn't going to sell any more newspapers so why not put something local going on, on the cover.

I didn't see it, but I'd be willing to bet the SF Chron didn't even THINK to put Rambo on the cover of "96 Hours"

for what it's worth....

Don't blame the overlords for that one, Mikey. I didn't pitch it as a cover story or anything -- so there was never a chance that it would be considered for the cover.

So blame me, if you want. I never really thought about it beyond what it became -- the three CD releases in one story -- mostly because I knew the Flywright and Faye Reis CD releases were the same weekend. So it seemed logical to put those together.

But honestly, I don't know that people around here -- especially the people who read The Bee -- care more about a local band than Rambo.

Mass appeal, ya know?

I'll try to do something bigger on Flight 409 at some point, though.
