36 Hours in Fresno

So, I've started a new project. Fresno doesn't exactly have the best reputation. It is time to flip that around and let's focus on the positive and unique aspects of Fresno. I've lived in the Fresno area all of my life. Today, a colleague shared with me his desire to turn our bad reputation around. I like the idea of that a lot. I mean, where's the hometown pride?

Our conversation continued, and as a result of our conversation I would like to propose a scenario:

"You have a really good friend coming to visit you and they will only be in Fresno for 36 hours. They have never been to Fresno and have requested that you show them everything that makes Fresno what it is. What would you show them and where would you take them?"

You really want to make this visit a memorable one. You want your friend to have a good time, and you yourself want an enjoyable time.

So, with that proposed, please share your ideas. I'd like to know what you think and what you would do. :)

JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!

I'm originally from Fresno, but have lived in the Salt Lake City area for 9 years now. I'll be in Fresno for a long weekend next week and am bringing my Utah drinking buddy with me. I know alot has changed but some of my 'old-standby' ideas were:
-Castillo's Mexican Restaurant; Best. Mexican. Ever!

-Tower District; no destination really, I just love the atmosphere.

-City Lights; this place is like the Mustang Ranch compared to anything we have, or that is allowed, in Utah. Gotta love boobies!

And, not much else. Any ideas? We're actually comedians who like to party (duh!) Live music and pretty ladies is right up our alley, so I kinda had Club Fred in mind. Anyone know an open stage a couple of comedians could rock?

i didn't see that...

I didn't see the NY Times thing until after I posted my comment---but the NY Post obviously had the right idea about the Underground Gardens. (After all, if you've seen one strip mall--no matter how nice it is-- you've seen them all.

Underground Gardens

Everyone who lives here always seems to forget the Underground Gardens. Everytime someone comes to visit me -- and it's open -- I take them there and --even though at first they think it's going to be some tacky tourist trap -- they are invariably blown away by the place. It truly is unique and very Fresno.

Yeah, but at the time, they couldn't go to the Met!

I'd take them there, to the Zoo, to one of the many cool farmer's markets, and if they're in season, a Grizzlies game.
