The Councilmen will play in Fresno on Wednesday, June 17 at Crossroads. Cover is $8 and following their performance, The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash will play.

The Councilmen premiered their first video featuring the song “Boxcar Sermon” in their hometown of Bakersfield, CA on April 3. Producer of The Councilmen’s video is Rodney Powell, the current drummer for the legendary band “The Tennessee Three” featuring Bob Wootton friend and lead guitarist for Johnny Cash. Powell also worked as road manager/drummer for the band Heartland and was the drummer for Randy Travis and Donna Summer.

Powell first heard The Councilmen, an Americana band with the influences of folk, country, rhythm and blues and rock, during a contest hosted by Great American Country (GAC) “The Next GAC Star.” He was looking for unique material for his current artists and had passed on hundreds of songs before coming across Boxcar Sermon.

“I was blown away at the vocals and sound of the song and I kept track of their progress on GAC,” Powell said.

Soon after Powell made contact with the band and members Keaton York, Julian Sanchez, Taylor Haley and Kyle Appleton were off to Tennessee and Alabama, where they spent a week in December shooting their first video.

“I wanted Boxcar Sermon to be the raw sound that I first heard during the contest,” he said. “Many bands never get the chance to get their music heard, with the writing of Keaton York and the music arrangements–this band is the one to watch.”

The Councilmen are featured artists on LP33.tv and their new song “Giant Killer” was recently picked up for an upcoming movie about stock car driver Bobby Allison, filming starts in July 2009.

In the summer of 2007, the band gained national attention when they were chosen from thousands of submissions to compete in the CBS EARLY SHOW “Living Room Live Battle of the Bands.”
