I've been a huge supporter of the Fresno MET since its grand re-opening in November (at least in print, if not with my money, though I've done a decent amount of shopping in the museum store). But the announcement that the museum is willing to cede its building to the city as a means of debt repayment is just sad. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt here (rather than cry mismanagement or the like), but it's a shame it has come to this. The museum (and its building) is a needed part of the downtown (and Cultural Arts) landscape. Let's hope that all parties can come to an agreeable solution. We need more stuff like this.
I hope the building directly
I hope the building directly behind the Met gets sold or leased. It is awesome and could turn into something great. When a friend inquired about leasing it, he got the brush-off from the museum, which said it's used for storage. I hope now, we'll be able to stoke a little more progress on that block.
Fresno Met
Allowing the city to become the new landlord for the Met is probably the best solution possible at this point. It doesn't mean the museum is going anywhere. It just means that land and building have a new owner. The Fresno Art Museum is located on city owned property in Radio Park. The city can then sell off other parcels on the museum block (not the museum building itself - but those properties facing Fulton street), and recoup some of the $15 million they (we) are losing on this deal.
