How would you make Famous even better? (suggestion box)

I like the new format--mostly.
Here's a few suggestions I'd like to make.
How about other users? What would you suggest?

One struggle I see, is finding the balance
between having as much content as possible
(that’s what makes this place interesting) and
keeping it streamlined and clear to users.

The other version was cluttered, but it kept
more subjects/conversations/events in front of
people’s eyes on the front page long enough to spark conversation
rr interest.

Here’s a couple suggestions I’d throw out to
The FresnoFamous Powers That Be…

“Sour Grapes”---this is the editors platform.
Wonderful---but should the editor’s
contributions also appear in ‘recent blogs”?
It nudges one more reader-contributed bit
off the front page.

“Popular Tags”…is this useful. Really? Does it
take up space where more stories or blogs could appear?

“Twitter”…it may be that I’m not down with the technology,
but this bit doesn’t grab me. That might just be me.

Maybe the amount of lines on the ‘recent blogs’ shown
on the front page could be limited, thus allowing more ‘headlines’
to be visible.

Once again, the more conversations and events up there in the front,
the more you might grab someone---like more fishing lines to grab more
fish, BUT, I do see the streamlined thing being important as well.

Great job Mr. Whitewater and all on the FresnoFamous staff. This is just my two cents.
Any others?

PLEASE fix the Inbox problem...

You know, the new Fresno Famous site is fine and dandy (I liked the original better--but I'm that way about everything...). There is one thing I was REALLY hoping would be fixed with the redesign and that is the problem with the phantom message in my inbox. Everyday I get an email from FF telling me I have a new private message---there's nothing there. When I scroll over the directory bar at the top and move it over "account" it shows that there is a meesage in my inbox...and there NEVER is. This has been going on forever. I just ignore it. I can't be the only one this is happening to but GEEZ! You'd think with the new site they would have fixed glitches like this. It's annoying---PLEASE fix it.

Thanks!

You all will have to grant

You all will have to grant permissions to do so--you have those options because you're a Drupal administrator. Doing so, however, will also give people the ability to publish as "sticky" or to the front page, if any of your lists take that into account.

pido's picture

drafts

one option would be to un-click the published check box under the "Publishing Options" expandable menu right above the submit button. You could then click the published checkbox when you are finished with the blog. I know this isn't the most elegant of options but it's an option until we can look into creating a draft feature.

I believe no unpublished items are viewable to anyone other than the person who created it, or at least it wont show up on any of the main pages. (but I could be wrong)

It would be great if the "Recent Posts" menu selection worked, or if in the My Account area it showed that. It's hard to go back to find discussions in which I participated.

as promised, the search is back up, and so is twitter. just mouse over the little T icon on the right side of the navigation bar and the twitter messages will pop up. if they lag, that's all twitter, its the best i can do for now. i've got another idea to solve that though, but it's gonna have to wait.

msoghoian's picture

thanks for the input

thanks for the input television fontman. there is a game plan for twitter. i believe you that it may have been occurring in the past 30 days, but i've noticed it for much longer (like since february) so we temporarily removed it until i can finish my fix for the problem.

i swear, i'll put the search up first thing in the morning. i've got so many things going at once, i keep forgetting about that.

you would need to get in touch with the amalgamation & coalition dept. to discuss your cahoots. but from a technological point of view, i would have a blast doing something like that. live city view cams are captivating to me.

and i don't know anything about those podcasts really, they come from someone else (pretty sure from whitewater).

msoghoian's picture

I for one used the Twiter

I for one used the Twiter API. The latency you describe isn't an on going problem as Twitter itself has been experiencing severe growing pains the past 30 days. All these probs have been well doccumented in the global tech blogs and podcasts. Even though it's tweekey right now, it's still better and more functional than the current alternatives.

Something I would like, and actually needed recently, is a way to search across all forum content and header text to find history on items I am interested in researching.

I would also like to see FF get into cahoots with a sponsor downtown and in the Tower District to provide updated livecam snap-shots of the areas.

Finally, since it is probably inevitable anyways, when is the 30 min weekly audio podcast going to be turned loose? As some who doesn't live in Fresno anymore, I am still wanting to be in tune to the local scene in addition to a web site portal.

Famous Bands

You may have noticed the layout of the "Famous Bands" and "All Bands" pages had been a little messed up since the redesign. I took the time to day to switch it from a table based layout to divs so we can control the layout better and make it so that you can actually see all the content of those pages. Thanks to everyone for the patience.

Also if you haven't noticed all blogs and audio now have a star rating system on them. Neat.

jhardy's picture

Recent posts

The recent post section is pulling in the recently updated blogs, articles, audio, and forum topics. I can filter out the most recent blog posts and sour grapes post from the recent posts section if that is whats wanted.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this topic?

jhardy's picture

Thanks and one suggestion.

First off, it's obvious that you guys really are tweaking and adjusting and trying to make FresnoFamous' new format all good and wonderful---thanks for all that.

Here's something: In the quest to make as much of the content visible on the front page but without getting all cluttered?.....how about everything in the 'Recent Posts' column being stuff that *isn't* already in the 'Sour Grapes' or 'Recent Blogs" column. I'm not sure if that's possible,
but that way you'd have several more threads being displayed up front yet take up no extra space.

thereminman's picture

swaping

I just swapped the mid section on the front page, because we felt it will help the content page flow a little better. We thought the advertisements on the left was breaking up the content to much, so we decided to do something about it. If you hate it, let us know.

jhardy's picture

wow, that just clicked. lol,

wow, that just clicked. lol, it only took like 2 hours for what you said to sink in. i finally noticed that it does say index instead of inbox. haha, i'll fix that now

msoghoian's picture

Well

that's a great idea on the only if there was a new message icon. Part of what really set off the (1) was it being a different color. If it popped up in yellow or red, being that the page is kind of lined up to draw you left, a message off to the right doesn't really stand out. A different color would help there.

As an aside, for myself, the ads kind of push me away from that side of the page.

i'll definitely get on that.

i'll definitely get on that. i've know about it for a while but since nobody brought it up, i've been working on the other stuff. I think it's pretty messed up right now (which is also why i've been avoiding it), like no links to anything or like you said, notifications. in addition, i was kinda thinking about a little icon up in the nav bar next to the account/logout links that would only appear if you had new messages in your inbox.

msoghoian's picture

Inbox (1)

I missed some messages in my inbox cause I was used to the heads up (1) next to my inbox icon. I didn't see the (1) so I didn't check my inbox. That'd be nice to have back.

It also seems that the Inbox is now called the Index. Not sure sure that is very intuitive. Perhaps a misspell? Took a random guess from me to find my missed messages.

I agree. the default drupal events calendar is pretty horrible. We've also noticed how annoying repeating events are, because it looks like there are some events that just repeat forever... calendar spam... stay tuned because a complete overhaul of the calendar is fairly near the top of our to do list.

I think it would be great if multiple posts in the events section would be deleted. There is one titled Healthy air living contest, that is posted close to 20 times in a row. It seems like a lot of events are posted multiple times like that. I find that rather annoying.
I have also noticed that when looking at the recent posts, where it shows the number of replies. It is not loading up properly. It is showing only part of the text.

- The site is designed for

- The site is designed for 800x600 screen res and it's fixed width. C'mon it's not 1999. Either give us fluid width or make it wider.

- On single pages the content is scrunched into a 420px wide box! You know how annoying it is to read stuff on here now? Your two sidebar columns do not contain a huge amount of content. You should combine them into one on the single pages and widen this content area.

- Comments are displayed in reverse chronological order, with the newest at the top. This is not the way people are used to reading comments. The newest should be at the bottom.

- Where are the forums? Where are the google maps?

- Where's the content? When you're on a single page all you have is the "Recent Posts" widget in the sidebar. No other way for us to view content. Where are the categories/sections that used to be in the top navigation?

- Links page is blank. http://www.fresnofamous.com/links

- "Soup Grapes," in the top nav, links to Jarah's old blog with outdated posts from 2007.

- Let me know if you need help with Drupal at all.

suggestions

Like the user above, I get the sense that nothing of substance has changed--just the appearance (colors, logos, etc.) The same tired photos are there, the same tired text, etc. It's like all you did was change your CSS script and hired someone to draw cool anti-MAN some fists. Your trivia under the header is from some robot. I guess I was hoping for more... there there.

Suggestions:
When I go to a site like this, I would like to see a running list of recent comments and posts in one place.

I'd like to see locally, user-produced video in one place.

In another place, I'd like an organized list, or Tags if you must,(not clutter boxes) linking to things like: Food, Bands, Nightlife, Music, Art.

User generated articles with structure--top-10 lists, or some user edited wikis. I mean, I'm no techie or futurist, but it looks like nothing from the past year has been adopted except for twitter, and that's been in the past few weeks.

I'll withhold final judgment until the really cool new features arrive... but there are a lot of free tools out there for non-techs. How about a user-driven calendar? Also, I must have missed this forum, but were we ever asked what we wanted in a redesign before the black on black on gray was chosen? And why does this site only have two people? that's just crap. The girls at Fresnocentric has more people than that.

You can be so much better than this Famous! I just want what's best for the Famous community and the Famous potential. I'm so excited about it sometimes. Let's get with 2007 before the year ends, please.
