This weeks The List comes via a Jim Boren post on downtown parking. He argues the city needs to quit charging people. I say people need to deal with the fact that sometimes you have to pay for parking. The whole world can't be Riverpark. Now, where can you find a good space downtown? That's the question.
I'll start with:
* Behind the Gallery off of M St. (ish). It's a free lot if you're hanging out in the Gallery and every time I've been there I've had no problem finding a space. Probably fills up around lunchtime.
* There are always meters just off of H St. down by the Greyhound Station. Good spot to park if you're gonna kick it on the mall. If you're OK with walking half a block. Which you should be.
You're turn.

FREE parking
You can park free at Yoshi NOW! even if you're not shopping there. Watch a baseball game...hit the other thrift stores...take a stroll down the Fulton Mall...or check out the galleries on art hop. Just reserve the spaces by the building for customers and the rest of the lot is yours.
my take
1. hero's has free parking. they have a dedicated lot that is just down the street from their location.
2. you can park for free at yoshi now, and american vintage if you're shopping at those places.
3. fresno had free parking downtown before. it was generally taken by the people that worked there, not by shoppers or others coming to the area.
4. with the exception of downtown events like a grizzlies game, meters are free after 6.
5. pretty much every large city has parking you pay for.
we don't need free parking downtown. having free parking won't revitalize downtown. we need more population density.
parking, parking, parking
You would think that it is a no brainer. If you want a better tax bases that will help encourage business in downtown, why make people pay for parking? I can see maintaining the mall as a walking area, but access to it should be convenient and free.
We've been spoiled
Mostly, I'm being stubborn here, and arguing maybe for the sake of it. But it seems like we've been spoiled by the Fashion Fairs and Riverparks with their vast expanses of free parking. Yay. Asphalt. If you want to correlate Downtown and the Tower/Clovis, etc, feel free. Visalia also has an awesome downtown with free parking, so yes, it can be done. But we can't act like free parking is going to solve any major problems.
The ridiculous thing is that
The ridiculous thing is that the meters are often in effect until 10pm. I haven't been to any other city that had meters going that late. How about 6pm?
parking, parking, parking
Dear FF:
For 25 years, I've heard about parking, parking, parking. From Dale Doig to Karen Humphries. From Jim Patterson to Alan Autry. And, 25 years later, it's still NOT working. What's taking so long?
Last month, approx. 20 of my Leadership Fresno classmates meet at Hero's for lunch. On Van Ness. Downtown. Some park on the street, but most of us park in the circular parking structure across the street.
On top of my commute to downtown Fresno from "north of Shaw," on top of my $12. French Dip w/ Freedom Fries, parking was $4. for one hour and 15 minutes! You've got to be kidding! $4!
FACT: I can park at Fig Garden Village for FREE. Same thing for Fashion Fair, River Park and Sierra Vista Mall. Plus the Tower District and Clovis!
If Chinatown can get rid of the parking meters, why can't downtown Fresno?
And one more thing, I can drive-through Fig Garden Village, Fashion Fair, River Park, Sierra Vista Mall, the Tower District and Clovis, too.
It's a SIMPLE SOLUTION: (1) Lose the parking meters. (2) Open up Fulton Mall to vehicular traffic!
;)
It's Fresno-yes, not Fres-no!

Park at Long's, Eat/Drink at Milano's
After you've had a delicious meal or tasty beer at Milano's, you can get a validated parking sticker for the nice spot you found in the Long's parking lot on the north end of the Fulton Mall.
Parking Lots
Park in any City lot, and come into Milano at 1243 Fulton Mall for validation stickers. This means like a thousand free parking spaces Downtown.
parking
There is a spot a block or two by the railroad tracks that run near Chukchansi Park. It appears it's Kern & G St. There were meters there at one time judging by the poles that seem to have missing meter tops. Anyway, I park there for Grizzlies games and obviously the Fulton Mall is near the Grizzlies stadium too.
I've never had any trouble. There are no meters so it's not like you're subverting the rules by parking there. Unfortunately, no shade really.
I would say between both sides of the street there is enough room to park 10-15 cars and I have always had a space during a Grizzlies game.
And, I don't know how Wells Fargo works in Fresno but Wells Fargo in Ashland, Oregon allows you to park FREE in their parking lot if it's NOT DURING BIZ hours. People in Ashland do it all the time -- would be curious to know if you can park at the Wells Fargo in downtown Fresno without hassle from them or the City.
