The young woman ringing up my groceries at the store was checking out my Rogue Festival shirt. She seemed unfamiliar with the event, but curious. "Oh, that looks interesting."
So obviously, I wanted to spread the good news of the Rogue, but didn't wanna go into some long speach---and I only had a few items to check out. I just told her that it included dance, and music and theater and a whole buncha cool stuff, and that she should watch out for it always near the beginning of March.
She said something to the effect of "you know, there really are so many interesting events going on around here."
I gave the answer: "Yeah, if you can get the information, you can usually find something to do for people of any interest."
She sort of looked thoughtful and then said," Yeah, you know, instead of just sitting at home."
She then brought up how she wanted to see the planetarium (I know nothing about it) at Fresno State and that her child had been there on a field trip.
ANYWAYs, I'm not sure how helpful sharing this conversation is...but it points to something I've been saying for the last couple of years:
the next step is to get 'regular' people to know about all the cool events that Tower/Downtown-supporting folks seem to be clued into.
"Regular" folks don't seem to follow the same blogs that I do---or necessarily read the Bee even though it's THE mainstream newspaper paper for the entire county --at least not the bits written by Osegueda/Monroe et al .
My guess is that they *do* watch TV....what to do?
There are boundaries of geography, racism, classism, familiarity, fear, and mostly 'just not knowing' and it 'not being part of what we regularly do on a night out'.
Any ideas to 'spread the news' even further than we have?
I mean....in a town of half a million we SHOULD have all of our doggone events bursting at the seams instead of sometimes not so well attended as we wished.
funny subject
i lived in fresno for 11 years and it wasnt until 3 years after i left fresno that i knew fresno had a chinatown.
this site is useless
for as much as fresnofamous has tried this site is useless... the bee is useless... it seems word of mouth and flyer's in the area of interest work the best. TV, Radio is only ok if you have the cash. It comes down to a Fan base connection... the Rogue lacks on reconnecting to people who went years before. I signed up at the 1st one many years ago I think I was contacted once and then I was never contacted again. But then I did not even go in the last two years. Why should I when the took the local performers out of it and added a bunch of out of towners.

Its like talking to a brick wall
I know exactly what you mean. I have, in the past mentioned to several new friends, co workers etc about 3 different hobbies, things I like to do, things I do and met with the same response by most "I had no idea Fresno had (Fill In the Blank), Are you sure??"
I have told people about bands I have seen and they should check out only to a response like "you mean there are other bands besides Mr Rude in Fresno? There is a place live bands can be seen?"
Or I mentioned i was going to see my cousin play ice hockey and got the response "There is an ice rink in Fresno??"
Amd this is from people who have lived in Fresno for years!!!
And heaven forbid I mention something is happening downtown!!
