Did anyone catch this video on Fox News tonight? http://www.foxnews.com/search-results/m/26461687/the-valley-hope-forgot....
It's Alan Autry and Sean Hannity exploiting the citizens and farmers of Fresno for their own political and personal gain.
The water being turned off because of the Delta Smelt was not Obama's doing, and it didn't even start on his watch. Where was this outrage when Bush was president?? Where was Hannity accusing "this administration" of hurting the valleys farmers when Bush was in office? Only now that a popular Dem is sitting in the oval office does Hannity think it's important to bring this problem to the attention of the national news media. Only now, is it the administrations fault a judge ordered the water to be turned off.
what a jerk! I hope you all see through his political posturing like I do. He doesn't give two squirts about this valley, all he cares about is who can he exploit next to benefit his agenda.
Screw you Sean Hannity.... Screw you!
When it comes to most groups
When it comes to most groups that call themselves "environmentalists" I totally agree with the conservatives. Most "environmentalist" groups do very little to protect the environment, or habitat, and spend almost all of their money lobbying the government to stop this or that, while most of the habitat and environmental preservation actually happens as a result of the hard work of conservation groups that don't call themselves environmentalists. Groups like hunters, fisherman, farmers, etc. The lobbyists and eco-terrorists that wrap themselves in the cloak of environmentalism don't do anything positive for the environment, or for our country.
As far as the rest of that info goes, thanks for sharing that link, I'll check it out.
Collapse of civilization in the valley
It's the message of the propaganda machine in our area that we're suffering dreadfully because of a lack of water. And the sympathetic nature of our good people not to disagree. Although there is some suffering, as there always is in Fresno, it's not nearly as bad as they would have us believe. Or that it is caused by environmentalists, they're real target.
The Farm Bureau website spells it out quite clealy: Year after year, including this last calendar year that ended June 1, 2009 has seen a new Ag production record set.
They just moved production from the Westlands Water District to other districts in the valley where there IS water. And there is a LOT of water available in other valley AG locations. Westlands is only a small percentage of the valley's acreage.
There's a lot of baloney in the valley when it comes to talk about water. Lloyd Carter has the facts and figures to make sense of it all. http://www.lloydgcarter.com/
Please help me understand your point correctly
Fresnoise: I'm not sure we're understanding those numbers correctly. It appears they are talking about the cash value of the crop, not the amount of crops produced. When food supply is down, and demand increases or remains unchanged, it's understandable to have a situation where less food is being produced, but the value of the food being produced is more. Where have you heard we've had an abundance of crops produced here in the valley. That's contrary to everything I'm hearing and reading. Thanks.
Crisis AND record-breaking Ag production?
How can we be having a farming crisis AND record-breaking Ag production all at the same time?
It's simple: They exaggerate the damage so they can demonize their political enemy, environmentalists, otherwise known as Satan's Children.
Even though we've had a 3 year drought and water cutbacks our robust and ingenious Ag producers have overcome these minor setbacks to produce yet another bumper crop for the year ending in June, 2009.
From the official Fresno County Farm Bureau website:
"On June 2, Fresno County Agriculture Commissioner Carol Hafner presented the County's 2008 Agricultural Crop and Livestock Report to the Board of Supervisors, announcing the annual production value for all crops produced in Fresno County. The $5.662 billion represents a 5.9 percent increase over 2007. The growth of Fresno County agriculture has been steady over the last couple of decades. Just over 25 years ago, the 1982 production value was $1.85 billion. Once again, this year sets a new benchmark, but 2008's total will be hard to beat because of multiple years of drought-induced acreage and production reductions and record-low milk prices."

Here is a more truthful point of view of the water crisis:
Exactly
You are exactly correct. They are not dealing with the real issue that California does not have a sustainable water policy in place. By making the issue fish vs farmers it is diverting the topic away from the real reasons why there is a drought. Schwarzenegger was out there stating that he would love to turn on the taps but thankfully he does not have that power. It is unfortunate about the farmers and farm workers in the west side of the valley but messing with the delta will have serious consequences not just on the smelt but also on the rest of the communities that are served by the delta.
