Can I take pictures at the Prado?

I'm traveling to Spain in 3 weeks and will be visiting the Prado. A friend of mine that went this summer said she took pictures inside the museum. I was surprised having always been told that the flash from cameras degrades the pigments in inks amoung other things. I have also assumed there are copyright issues. The museum's site doesn't indicateif photos are allowed.

So did my friend "get away" with something( she said she didn't use a flash btw) doany of you havefirst hand knowledge that confirms this? If its true I will take a better camera.

The Prado

The Prado is huge! Not as big as the Louvre, but still huge. In some of the exhibit spaces they are less stringent than others. If you want to take a picture of a Roman statue - no problem. Try taking a picture of your favorite Goya painting and they'll kick you out.

I would highly reccomend that you not miss the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museo. It's smaller, more eclectic. What the Musee D' Orsay is to the Louvre, the Thyssen Bornemisza is to the Prado.

Final thought. If you really want to "do" the Prado, hire a docent. They're cheap, and they can make navigating the cavernous Prado fun.
