Search

I hear there are these things called site searches. Should we get one?

Site Search

I think having the ability to search Fresno Famous would be very useful. It is aggravating to remember reading something and not be able to find it again. I want to say that site-wide search field usually shows up at the top right of a webpage. A quick survey of news sites (news.com, nyt.com, usatoday.com, fresnobee.com) shows that every one has it above the content, but lateral position varies. Jacob Nielsen, a web usability expert, says "Search is the user's lifeline for mastering complex websites. The best designs offer a simple search box on the home page and play down advanced search and scoping." He says: backed up by research: that users confused by a sites structure will look for a search box to find what they need. For this resson it is important to include a simple search box on every page of a site. If a user becomes lost or trapped in the site structure they will want to use a search box to reorient themselves. This page links to more of what Jacob Nielsen has to say about site searching: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20010513.html
