In honor of all you poor students out there, Fresno Famous is presenting a special Spring Break Travel Guide. We understand that poor students like body shots and sleeping with total strangers too, and wouldnít want you to miss out on any of the fun those fat cats are having. What if we told you a glamorous spring break vacation could be yours for less than $100? Shocking right? And what if we told you said vacation was to the most popular Spring Break destination on earth: Mexico?
"Càllate pinche gringo!" is what you'd say.
Beautiful, historic Tijuana is only 363 little miles away. Lucky for you, rival bus companies vie for the Mexican market and offer cheapo fares up and down California and Mexico. With the price of gas hovering around $2.10 per gallon, these fares are practically stealing.
Your best bet for heading down to Tijuana for a little rest and regurgitation is Tres Estrellas de Oro bus lines. They offer two daily departures, at 1:10 pm and 10:30 pm (the rojo-eye), seven days a week, from Fresno to Tijuana. Buses leave from the Super Mercado Mexico on Fresno and F Street. One way Fresno-Tijuana is only $30, but coming back it's $35. A round trip ticket will save you some cash- it's only $55. Load up some Los Tigres del Norte on the ol' iPod, because the trip is eight hours. If you have a problem with companies that intimidate and threaten their employees who try to unionize, you might want to consider InterCalifornias Bus Lines, who are members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
InterCalifornias' Tijuana party bus leaves from the corner of Fresno and S Street. at 9:00 am, 2:00 pm, and 10:30 pm. The ride is about 9 hours. You can purchase tickets at 1142 S Street (it might help to speak some Spanish). One way will set you back $30, while round trip is $61.
A third option is Mundo Travel, whose buses leave from the Fulton Mall at 1921 Fresno Street. There's a bus at 2:00 pm daily, which arrives in TJ at 10:00 pm. One way costs $30, and roundtrip is $60.
Under no circumstances should you take Greyhound. A one-way ticket to TJ is $38, or a 27% premium over the Mexican carriers. A round trip Greyhound ticket is a whopping $70- and that's before tax! Are people so xenophobic that they are willing to pay a stiff premium for the chance that not *everyone* on the bus will be Mexican? Making friends with the locals is the best part of any vacation.
While in Tijuana, you can enjoy open air markets, top notch Mexican street food, and underage UCSD cuties. Enjoy, and tell 'em Fresno Famous sent ya!
