In reading some previous entries, I know some of you are fans of Joel Kotkin. I've known him for years (he's friends with my old boss the former ED Director for the City of San Jose - Leslie Parks). He has an interesting piece in the LA times about the "Third California," which includes Fresno.
It can be found at:

Believe it not Jocelyn Fuller turned me on to this guy before she departed town
Has anyone read Kotkin's
Has anyone read Kotkin's book?
Kotkin
I think bringing Kotkin's views to the table will be a breath of fresh air and provide a much needed counterbalance to our present condition of only Floridian, all the time. Thanks for introducing another vital element to the discussion
Re: Third California
There is always an urge by people in the media to assign names to things, and the same urge by marketing people. Thus to NPR we're "The New California" (a phrase Fresno State picked up on quickly and now uses as "The University for the New California". And to the LA Times we are the Third California. You're right, Sacramento and Bakersfield may be as dissimilar as they are alike, but in the framework he presents in this article, I suppose it fits.
what did you think about his
what did you think about his piece? This idea of a "third California" sounds nice, but can we really lump Sacramento in with Bakersfield? What are all these new white collar workers doing in Bakersfield anyway? That's a tough pill to swallow.
