Exurban Hardcore

Occam's Razor, a three-piece featuring drums, guitar, and bass has emerged from the suburban backyards and garages of Fresno to instigate a revival of hardcore in Fresno. Their new split 7", with Alta Loma's Lachance, features two of their new tracks: "Pay Not Attention to the Man behind the Curtain" and "Stopwatch."
Jordan Sobolew, the band's drummer, describes their sound as hardcore, screamo, metal, or punk. While their songs weave anywhere between those genres, they occasionally rest on West Coast indieisms played under a sample from the movie "Dazed And Confused".
The music is by no means static -- what is momentarily lulling quickly becomes brutal and harsh; what is stuttering and syncopated wastes little time in returning to a noise assault. This is not your parent's music. Nor is it the music of your indie-rocking Tower crowd.
What makes Occam's Razor more than just one more band in Fresno's Sisyphean theatre? Conceptual depth and growth for one thing. Their first 7"'s insert lamented white picket fences and the rat race that accompanies them, while this record (a year later), not only implores listeners to seek out alternative media, but also includes the alienating post-op examination paperwork for a child with a cleft palate. A limited edition?
Occam's Razor will be on tour throughout the western United States and British Columbia beginning in July.
