a painter's painter
having had the opportunity to talk with this young artist this afternoon, I can safely say that he is worth checking out.
His subject matter is a bit disturbing, at least in the setting and in his oils. They will get to you.
-they work.
There is something to be said for creepy, the ominous hum of electric meters, the green metal enameled casings, the function of corporate utilites and business. The ozone created both by the machines of power, and the people who weild such...
Some Machinery is scary in that it is blunt and oil soaked. (and the necessary fears and imagery of bruatlity are easily understood.)
Nigels work goes for a more advanced level.
It's the shirt and tie, 'fight club,' 'reservoir dogs,' world, where pain can be inflicted, addictions fed, and the dark side of the corporate utilitarian science is traffic'd in.
It's not passive aggressive, it's radiation.
Not surprising, considering the friends he keeps, he's quite a nice guy, well spoken, calm mannered, intelligent, quite pleasant.
His technique is phenomenal, he is (shockingly,) self taught, and uses a lost understanding of oils that I completely get, took years of training in, and am amazed that he's pulled this off by himself, and totally applaud.
This is not pretty stuff, true, -but this is stuff of note.
This IS what Caravaggio would have painted, had he worked in a plant or power facility somewhere.
(I don't often make such statements, Yes, this painter is that good.)
considering his age, and that we're looking at, what, another 60 years of this guys work? should he stay with it?
I'd say that this area is in for six decades of (okay, unsettling and creepy,)
--but brilliant and nearly extinct methods,
-and rarely seen levels of talent.
I do hope he goes far.
This is not 'one of Fresno's best painters,'
He's one of the best anywhere you put him.
(Here's to creepy basements, dusty boxes, and never, ever using the color black, my friend.)
nigel is my hero
You wanna know who really looks horrible?
99.9% of the patrons of River Park and Fashion Fair. Advertising is a cattle prod. Even rebellious individuality is a pre-packaged, easily sold product. Enjoy looking like every fucking body else in your Locust t-shirt and tight jeans.
cruisin for a bruisin
