Famous has learned that Fresno's
Gay Pride celebration scheduled for this Saturday is in danger of being tied up in red tape and shot dead.
The celebration includes a parade down Olive Avenue in the Tower beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a festival that includes vendors, entertainment, a beer garden, and a bounce house for kids.
Community Link, the group organizing the event, was told just last week that the permit they secured from the city is invalid.
Apparently Lt. Belluomini of the Fresno PD put the kabash on the permit for the event, saying that the city official who approved the permit did not receive his approval in writing. This is the same lieutenant that
lead the police raids of the now defunct gay club Bam Bam's from 2000 to 2002.
This is the 14th annual gay pride parade and festival, and organizers say the PD and city are asking them to provide more information than usual on very short notice. Last Thursday, the PD demanded a traffic plan for Olive Avenue, where the parade will be held. This plan would have had to have been performed by a private company and was unlikely to be completed before Saturday. The request was later rescinded, but the PD is still demanding a list of all vendors who have registered to set up at the event. Community Link feels the request violates privacy rights.
The PD has already shrunk the designated festival area to less than one city block on Alhambra near Olive. Calls for assistance from city councilwoman Sterling were unanswered, according to members of the organizing party.
Community Link will be meeting with the Fresno PD today at 4 p.m. to discuss more "changes" to their permit. If the PD shuts down gay pride Famous will be organizing a riot that just might include some
Taco Festival tragedies. Watch yer back, Miss Chica Cutie.
